Statement

Across multiple mediums, my work serves as therapy for myself and insight for others into the world of mental disorders. My practice explores my personal experience with eating disorders. Eating disorders are medically recognized mental disorders and have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness. National surveys estimate that 12% of women and 6% of men in America will have an eating disorder at some point throughout their lives. It should be recognized that eating disorders can affect anyone, at any age. By viewing my work, I want the viewer to take away a deeper understanding of the mind of someone with an eating disorder, or more broadly any mental disorder.

My work highlights different characteristics of eating disorders such as control, insecurities, overbearing emotions, impacts on others, and anxieties. My practice often involves multiples through techniques such as hand building or slip casting. Producing multiples allows me to experience a sense of control that I no longer indulge in with my eating disorder; repetition and rituals. I see my work as a means for others to either know that they’re not the only ones struggling or develop a deeper understanding of eating disorders. By using my history and current battles with eating disorders, I encourage others to have more empathy towards individuals living with an eating disorder.
